Youth

Welcome to the Youth page of the ASH Wales Website.

The next few paragraphs will hopefully give you an insight into the work that we and young people are currently doing across Wales with the Youth Volunteering Project.

GwirVol logoASH Wales (Action on Smoking and Health) works throughout Wales to tackle tobacco use and this programme is specifically aimed to provide up to date and accurate information to young people about tobacco. Through the volunteering programme we hope that you will gain the skills necessary to deliver peer to peer information around tobacco use and help give brief advice to young people looking to make that all important Quit Attempt! Some topics that we cover include:-

  • The health effects on the body for young people through tobacco use
  • The financial implications of tobacco use for young people
  • Learn exactly what goes into a cigarette (there are 4,000 chemicals to choose from)
  • The marketing of tobacco to young people

WAG logoAll the training and events are hands on meaning that you get to take part in a range of workshops and activities with fellow youth members. You will be welcomed on board by all current peer members, invited to join the ASH Wales Facebook page and be regularly contacted about what’s happening along with having the option to sit on the Youth Advisory Committee to help make decisions on taking the project forward.

BAT protestYou don’t have to be a whizz kid on tobacco issues and/or health, just need to have the enthusiasm and the passion to learn about this highly addictive product. We won’t discriminate against you if you are or used to be a smoker; we will offer support and advice during the project to help your Quit Attempt.

MV LogoOne last thing, all young people aged 16-24 years will be invited to sign up to the Millennium Volunteers scheme. This will provide you with recognition for your sustained commitment to your voluntary activities, giving you a sense of achievement when you receive your 50 and 100 hours certificate and then your Award of Excellence at your milestone 200 hours! The award doesn’t cost you a penny in fact we will reimburse reasonable expenses incurred such as travel and food.

Belief in the Ban

Nia Jeffreys of Asthma UK Cymru said;

"Tobacco smoke excludes people with asthma from public places, and 40% of adults with asthma say they avoid smoky pubs and restaurants. It is excellent news that people with asthma will now be protected from the terrible effect of other people's smoke on their health."

Fact:

A child starts smoking In the UK every 4 minutes. Every eight seconds, someone in the world dies due to tobacco. About 106,000 people in the UK die each year due to smoking. Smoking-related deaths are mainly due to cancers, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and heart disease.
