Welsh Tobacco Control Alliance (WTCA)

The WTCA is a project developed by ASH Wales to enable all third sector organisations involved with tackling tobacco in Wales to inform and influence policy development and implementation, at both a UK and Wales level.

The vision of the WTCA is:

A coordinated tobacco control strategy for Wales that will progressively reduce the harm caused by tobacco.

The goals of the WTCA are:

The Welsh Tobacco Control Alliance will provide the means by which third sector organisations from across Wales can influence tobacco related policies at local, regional and national levels.

The principles of the WTCA are:

  • WTCA membership will reflect the wide range of third sectororganisations and disciplines concerned with the impact of tobacco on Wales and its people.
  • The WTCA will endeavour to address tobacco inequalities in all its activities.
  • The WTCA will be an inclusive, participatory body that encourages active engagement of its members.
  • The WTCA will be consultative of its members, transparent and accessible.

The aims of the WTCA are:

  • To engage in efforts to influence tobacco policies and the strategy for tobacco control in Wales.
  • To ensure that WTCA members have ongoing opportunities to influence WTCA structure, activities, policy priorities, and other organisational concerns.
  • To evaluate the activities and functioning of the WTCA.

Who can join?

Membership is open to all third sector organisations in Wales whose remit includes a tobacco control focus or who work with those vulnerable to tobacco.

Associate membership may be granted to those organisations within the private sector that can demonstrate a firm commitment to reducing the effects of tobacco on the people of Wales.

All member organisations are required to declare that they do not have connections, affiliations or holdings with the tobacco industry or its representatives. Individuals are not eligible to join the WTCA. Organisations must ensure delegates to the WTCA are sufficiently senior and knowledgably to vote on coordinated policy initiatives of the WTCA.

The WTCA will meet at least three times a year.

ASH Wales will provide a member of staff whose responsibility is to co-ordinate the work of the WTCA. ASH Wales will be responsible for.

The WTCA is a milestone development in tackling tobacco. Together we can meet the challenge that tobacco presents to Wales and its people.

Did You Know?

Five days after quitting most nicotine by-products have gone!

Tobacco Industry quotes:

"It has long been common knowledge that along with the pleasures of smoking come real risks of serious diseases and that smoking can be difficult to quit. Governments throughout the world have based their tobacco control policies on this knowledge. In our view, an informed adult decision to enjoy the pleasures of smoking while balancing those pleasures against the risks is no more criticism that many other lifestyle choices we all make."

BAT, December 2000, Smoking and Health messages.

Recent studies have shown that over 80% of smokers start smoking before they were 18. A child cannot make an informed adult decision.
