Professor the Baroness Finlay
Professor the Baroness Finlay of Llandaff is President of ASH. Ilora Finlay is a Professor of Palliative Medicine working with the Marie Curie Cancer Care since 1987. She was Vice Dean in the School of Medicine, Cardiff University between August 2000 and October 2005 and has recently taken up the position of President at the Royal Society of Medicine.
Since her elevation to a Peerage in 2001, she has been actively involved in debates on health issues, particularly relating to Health and Tobacco. She is a Member of the Select Committees on Science and Technology, and recently on the Assisted Dying for the Terminally Ill Bill. She is President of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists, MS Cymru and Patron of Shalom Hospice, Wales. She was Welsh Woman of the Year 1996-97 and has held Visiting Professorships at Gröningen University (Johanna Bijtel Chair), and University of Melbourne.
She has published and lectured widely on palliative care, and researched into aspects of cancer palliative care. She established the internationally renowned Certificate Diploma/MSc distance learning courses in palliative care at Cardiff University, from which over 900 senior clinicians worldwide have graduated.
Professor Steve Tomlinson
Professor Steve Tomlinson CBE MD FRCP FMedSci is the Chairman for Ash. He is a Past Vice-Chancellor, University of Wales College of Medicine (UWCM) Former Provost, Wales College of Medicine, Biology, Life & Health Sciences & Deputy Vice Chancellor, Cardiff University, now Provost, Cardiff University.
Professor Tomlinson is an Honorary Consultant Physician in Diabetes in the Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust. His research interests are in intracellular signalling and the organisation and delivery of services for people with diabetes. He is also currently leading initiatives in Cardiff and in Wales in the history of medicine, lifestyle and health, and the arts, humanities, biomedical and health sciences.
Ms Tanya Buchanan
Ms Tanya Buchanan BA(Hons), BSc, MBA, DipPM is the Director for ASH. Tanya has extensive experience in health services management; she has worked in healthcare and education fields for fourteen years.
Mrs Sue Evans
Mrs Sue Evans is Office Manager and an experienced Smoking Cessation Counsellor. As part of her role in Ash she was involved in the setting up and running of the Smokers ' Helpline for Wales.
Mr Daniel Clayton BA
Mr Daniel Clayton BA, has previously worked at Smokefree Cardiff and is leading ASH Wales youth orientated Ffaith Project
Mr Stephen Harries
Mr Stephen Harries is a qualified member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy. He is the Director of Development at the Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust. Mr Harries also holds positions as a Trustee with the Cardiff University Pension Fund, Treasurer with "Live Music Now! (Wales)", and Trustee and Vice Chairman of Council, George Thomas Memorial Trust.
Mr John Griffiths
Mr John Griffiths B.Ed (Hons) M.Sc. FRSH has more than 20 years experience in the development and implementation of health promotion programmes, and is a leading international expert on tobacco control and workplace health promotion (WHP).
John has chaired the UK No Smoking Day Committee and has been instrumental in the establishment of a number of prevention and cessation campaigns and has managed several media-led Quit and Win initiatives. He is an experienced trainer, working in several European countries, TV and radio broadcaster, guest lecturer at several universities and regular keynote speaker at meetings and conferences.
Dr Ian Campbell
Dr Ian Campbell MD, FRCP (Edin & Lond) has worked as a chest physician for 29 years and has been involved with ASH for 28 years. Dr Campbell was responsible for setting up the first NHS hospital-based Smoking Cessation Counsellor in Wales and is a keen supporter of a no smoking ban, amongst other smoking prevention and cessation measures.
Mr Alan French
Mr Alan French BDS (Lond), LDSRCS (Eng), DDPHRS (Eng), is a retired dentist who held a senior position in dental public health in South and West Wales. He is a strong advocate on the need to influence decision makers to the dangers of tobacco and has been a member of the Ash Committee for 10 years.
Mrs Caroline Watts
Mrs Caroline Watts MSc Hlth & Prom, has worked in Health Promotion and Public Health since the 1980's. Initially her work in tobacco control was with cessation, becoming one of the first QUIT counsellors and also writing for and presenting at WHO and European level. Caroline's special interest in public health and primary care led to a three year secondment to the Welsh Assembly Government before returning to Monmouthshire's Local Public Health Team as part of the National Public Health Service.
Mrs Lynette Pothecary
Mrs Lynette Pothecary works as a Health Promotion Officer/Smoking Cessation Advisor within the Environmental Health Department of City and County Council of Swansea. She has worked extensively in smoking cessation, particularly with young people, and has been instrumental in setting up many projects working with young people in the Swansea area. Lynette also works with the all-Wales Smoking Cessation Service as a Smoking Cessation Counsellor.
Mr Ian Scale
Mr Ian Scale LWCMD, CertEd, MPH, is lead officer on tobacco control for the National Public Health Service for Wales. He has been involved in smoking issues since 1988, initially with the Heartbeat Wales programme and Health Promotion Wales. Ian combines his national role with that of a Principal Public Health Officer in Pembrokeshire.
Mrs Sonja Edwards was the first NHS hospital-based Smoking Cessation Counsellor in Wales a post she still maintains with great success at Llandough Hospital. Sonja speaks regularly at conferences and training sessions for health professionals working in the smoking cessation area.
Mrs Helen Poole
Mrs Helen Poole BA (Hons), Post.Grad.Dip, is also a hospital-based Smoking Cessation Counsellor working at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where she advises inpatients on their smoking habits and liaises their care on discharge.
