The Dental Postgraduate Section of the School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Studies, Cardiff University, supports trained dental personnel who provide in practice training on offering smoking cessation advice in Primary Dental Care Practice and Clinics. Dental Practitioners and their team are well placed to offer cessation advice to their patients.

They are able to explain the effect of smoking on teeth and oral tissues. Whilst many patients know about the risk of oral cancer and staining of teeth, it is not always recognised by the public that gum disease is a common outcome of smoking, and this can lead to premature tooth loss.

The Welsh Assenbly Government website provides useful information about the smoking ban in Wales, how it will affect you and the businesses and celebrities who are already supporting a smoke free Wales. Smoking is the greatest preventable cause of illness, disability and premature death in Wales. It is estimated that there are some 6,000 smoking-related deaths in Wales each year. This website sets out the Assembly Government's strategies for helping and encouraging smokers to quit and non-smokers not to start.

Wasted! The Trading Standards service has the responsibility for legislative tobacco control including controls on tobacco advertising, pack warning statements, location of cigarette vending machines, and under age sales issues. As well as law enforcement the service uses preventative education with retailers and young people as a means of tackling illegal access to tobacco. One such tool has been developed within Caerphilly County Borough Council to raise the awareness of the legal, health and social impacts of substance misuse among young people. WASTED! is an interactive ICT based teaching/training resource for use in school and youth settings. The resource covers tobacco, alcohol and volatile substance misuse and has been designed to fit into the PSE curriculum. The resource is available free of charge for use in Wales.

ASSIST is a peer-led intervention health promotion programme designed to reduce the prevalence of smoking. Research has shown that smoking among young people is a group activity.

The ASSIST programme aims to reduce smoking amongst young people aged 12-13 by training influential students to disseminate new norms of behaviour through their established social networks. Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, ASSIST will be rolled out in 50 schools per year based on levels of deprivation. Results of the original trial showed an 18.3% reduction in smoking behaviour confirming that this type of intervention is particularly effective.

Belief in the Ban

Nia Jeffreys of Asthma UK Cymru said;

"Tobacco smoke excludes people with asthma from public places, and 40% of adults with asthma say they avoid smoky pubs and restaurants. It is excellent news that people with asthma will now be protected from the terrible effect of other people's smoke on their health."

Fact

"Not only are tobacco farmers at risk from the pesticides used to grow their crop, they are also prone to ´green tobacco sickness´ which is caused as a result of absorbing nicotine through their skin by direct contact with wet tobacco leaves. Nausea, general weakness, dizziness, abdominal cramps, and fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rates are all common symptoms of ´green tobacco sickness´."
