ASH Wales: Training

The Wales Tobacco Control Alliance has been actively lobbying for improved access to tobacco control training across Wales. The current lack of easy access to tobacco control and smoking cessation training in Wales needs to be rectified as a priority. The Alliance is calling on the Welsh Assembly Government to introduce a Tobacco Control Strategy for Wales that includes improved access to training across Wales.

This page is intended to give an outline of training currently available. Unfortunately most of the current training service provision is ad hoc rather than embedded in organisational systems and offered on a regular basis.

Development of Training Standards for Smoking Cessation in Wales

ASH Wales and Stop Smoking Wales are currently working in partnership to identify opportunities for improving training in a variety of tobacco control and smoking cessation formats across Wales.

The first output from this partnership will be the development of Standards in Smoking Cessation Training for Wales. The development of these standards will bring Wales into line with the requirements established by NICE and ensure that training provided in cessation in Wales meets the needs of the Welsh population. If you are interested in participating in the consultation on the Welsh Standards for Smoking Cessation Training please register your interest at

Fascinating Facts

Smoking is the single greatest cause of preventable illness and premature death. It kills around six times more people in the UK than road traffic accidents (3,439), other accidents (8,579), poisoning and overdose (3,157), murder and manslaughter (513), suicide (4,066) and HIV infection (234) – all put together 22,833 (2002 figures).

Environmental consequences of tobacco

A vast amount of wood is used to dry or cure tobacco. In southern Africa alone an estimated 200,000 hectares of woodlands are cut annually to support tobacco farming. This accounts for at least 12% of deforestation in the region.
